Pollution Control and Environmental Protection

The management and protection of the atmospheric environment, along with the development and application of related policies and measures, is an ongoing priority. The Laboratory is highly recognized for its expertise in atmospheric environment issues. The Laboratory's research focus in this field encompasses the following areas:

  1. Development and Regulation of Air Pollution Control Strategies
  2. Emissions Inventories (Greenhouse Gases, Air Pollutants)
  3. Development and Application of Atmospheric Models for Pollution Control Planning and Assessment
  4. Design of Monitoring Networks and Air Quality Assessment through Measurements
  5. Development and Application of Models for Assessing Industrial Accident Impacts
  6. Design of Large-Scale Industrial Accident Response Strategies
  7. Global Atmospheric Environmental Issues

The LPAD, recognizing the continuous need for the improvement of the atmospheric environment, participates in innovative activities summarized as follows:

  1. National greenhouse gas inventories to meet the country's obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol (2008–present).
  2. Study and design of Athens’ Green Traffic Ring
  3. Conducting specialized air pollution measurement
  4. Methodology for spatial and urban planning in Seveso-regulated industrial areas

The laboratory's research activity in the field of Air Quality Protection and Pollution Control is reflected in over 80 publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, with the results being adopted and implemented as environmental policies and measures. In addition, the laboratory has been a long-standing Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Energy, and Climate Change on matters related to Climate Change.
