Laboratory Exercises

As part of the laboratory courses of Unit Operations I & II, students have the opportunity to carry out the following laboratory exercises:

α/αLab Exercise
01Fludization
Objective: The experimental study of the phenomenon of fluidized
bed particle behavior.
02Pump
Objective: The study of the operation of the centrifugal pump.
03Heat Exchanger
Objective: The experimental operation and investigation of the characteristics of a heat exchanger.
04Air Drying
Objective: Familiarization with the drying process using air flow in a laboratory shelf dryer and
the analysis of the parameters that influence it.
05Distillation
Objective: The study of fractional distillation in continuous operation
to separate a binary mixture.
06Crystallization
Objective: The study of the basic principles of the crystallization phenomenon
using a batch cooling crystallizer.
07Solid-Liquid Extraction
Objective:The study of solid-liquid extraction for the recovery of the oily phase
from cocoa powder and the calculation of extraction kinetics
based on the Peleg model.
08Freeze Drying
Objective: The study of freeze-drying (a drying process of a frozen product
through sublimation of ice).
09Reverse Osmosis
Objective: To study the desalination process using the reverse osmosis method
and the solution of basic mass balances and mass transfer equations.
10Evaporator
Purpose: Familiarization with the evaporation process and experimental determination
of heat transfer coefficients.
