Development of innovative waste bags containing encapsulated antibiotic substances for application in medical and high microbial load solid waste (SafeBag)

Objective: The main objective of the SafeBag project was to develop and study innovative antimicrobial waste bags designed for the collection of waste with high microbial load, which could pose a risk to public health and cause infection hotspots. The project resulted in the creation of a waste bag containing encapsulated antimicrobial substances. Additionally, the bag was equipped with an oxygen sensor that alerts when the bag is open and ready for use, as well as a carbon dioxide sensor that detects microbial activity. Furthermore, the goal was to enable the controlled and gradual release of antimicrobial substances inside the bag, ensuring the neutralization of microbes and making the waste safe for public health.
